It started as a class sample.
I used a pile of low volume scraps to make a big slabs and grabbed a stack of fabric on my way out the door to teach Improv Applique. It was so unplanned I didn’t have thread for the applique and had to shop the floor of the quilt show before my class started! As is the case in this class, the shape was improvised on the spot. Maybe I had the idea before? I don’t remember. Regardless, it’s a good shape to teach because we have curves and corners.
In the autumn I found myself drawn to the project. It moved from a class sample to something I wanted to work on regularly. That doesn’t always happen, but I’m grateful when it does. These bowls filled me up. One night I prepped a handful of bowls and basted them while watching a documentary on underground abortion providers called The Janes. I stitched while escaping into the world of Dave and Morley in The Vinyl Cafe. Retreating into making, into the analog (as the kids these days say) was the balm I needed.
She’s not a big piece, but she’s bright!
